General G.C. Wharton Railroad Collection. 1869-1895 (Bulk: 1880s)

A large archive of railroad-related materials consisting of approximately 50 items from the papers of General G.C. Wharton, CSA and his son, William Wharton (1864-1919). Partially printed business forms and ledger sheets dominate these records, and pertain mostly to the Virginia, Kentucky and Ohio Railroad during the 1880s. Interestingly, some of the payroll documents are signed by William Wharton in his capacity as Paymaster while still a teenager. Included, too are the following: Colton's Railroad and County Map of the United States Canadas &C (32"x40"), 1869, G.W. & C.B. Colton & Co., New York City. This is an incredibly detailed color map that extends from the Eastern Seaboard to Texas and the Dakota Territory. In addition to the county's towns and railroads, this map also incidates the locations of various Indian tribes. Printed on thin stock, the map folds into a 4"x6" leatherette cover with a gold foil stamped title. Also included in the collection is a is a huge fold-out map of The Richmond and Louisville Railroad (27"x41-1/2"), ca.1890, G.W. & C.B. Colton & Co., New York City showing the major routes across Virginia, and a Kentucky and a Pennsylvania R.R. Engine Class "O" map (6-1/2"x11"), ca.1895. There is also a fine schematic line drawing of a late 19th century locomotive in this collection.
